As its name suggests, this is a video conversion tool that supports many popular video formats, both for the input and the output. These formats include AVI, MPG, MOV, FLV, VOB, and WMV, among others. The program can also be used to extract the audio from your video files and save it as an MP2, MP3, WAV, or AC3 file. However, this tool offers a strange – and sometimes uncomfortable – user interface.
Official Video Converter supports conversion in batches, so that you can convert multiple video files in a single operation. Besides, the program includes a built-in media player you can use to preview any video file on your conversion list. However, it will take this media player a while to start playing back the video you selected, and the playback quality really leaves a lot to be desired. Besides, this player is pretty unstable and usually raises an exception which sometime forces you to close the program and restart the entire process from scratch.
The program allows you to select whether to use any of the included presets or build your own output configuration. If you select to use the presets, you will just need to choose the output format and the preset itself. If you decide to configure it yourself, you will be allowed to set the video codec, its resolution, its aspect ratio, its frame and bit rate, as well as the audio codec, its frequency, the number of channels, and the audio bit rate. You can also enable or disable either the video or the audio streams in your resulting files. Many of the included presets are designed to be compatible with some portable devices and game consoles, such as Nokia cell phones, Palm devices, PSP, PS3, and Sony Walkman. The program also includes a CD-burning tool that allows you to crate audio CDs, though it only accepts WAV files as input.
Finally, I must mention that Official Video Converter seems to consume many more system resources than most other video converters. Besides, it may take you a while to get used to the program's interface, as it is pretty different from most similar tools. At least, the program provides good conversion speeds and a high output quality.
